Eastern Illinois University is now recruiting candidates for the 2021-22 Accelerated Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Program. To be eligible for admission to the program, a candidate must:
Have a bachelor’s degree in the specific content area with a minimum 2.65 GPA by May 2021
Pass content area test (see https://www.il.nesinc.com/)
Be admitted to the EIU Graduate School as a non-degree seeking student
Complete a criminal history / background check
The program plan includes an 8-week summer intensive on the EIU campus in Charleston (June-July 2021), followed by
a one-year, full-time teaching residency while completing additional online courses:
Summer 2021: General teaching methods, educational psychology, diversity in schools, special education
(13 semester hours)
Fall 2021: Specific content area teaching methods, first semester of residency (9 semester hours)
Spring 2022: Content area literacy, second semester of residency (9 semester hours)

Bachelor’s degree in the specific content area with a minimum 2.65 GPA (May 13, 2021)

Acceptance by the EIU Graduate School as a non-degree seeking student (May 13, 2021)
Criminal history / background check through EIU vendor (May 13, 2021)
First Semester Residency Admission Requirements (Due by July 23, 2021)
Complete Summer 2021 courses with a minimum 3.00 GPA and no Ds or Fs
Complete university speech and hearing screening, state-required physical examination, and tuberculosis test
Complete Mandated Reporter training
Second Semester Residency Admission Requirements (Due by December 17, 2021)
Complete first semester residency and specific content area teaching methods course
Criminal history / background check through second semester residency school district
Program Cost
For the program’s first cohort (2020-21), total cost (including tuition, university fees, textbooks, and testing
fees) was approximately $15,500. Costs for the second cohort (2021-22) should be about the same, but will
vary depending on final 2021-22 university tuition and fee rates that are determined by the EIU Board of
Trustees in late Spring. The university provides tools to estimate costs at https://www.eiu.edu/finaid/cost.php.
Interested candidates should bear in mind that this program includes a mix of on-campus and online courses,
and that tuition is charged at the graduate rate. Updates on more specific costs will be available at

Because the Accelerated Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Program leads to initial teacher licensure,
certain forms of financial aid are available for admitted students who continue to make satisfactory academic

Golden Apple Accelerators Program
The Golden Apple Foundation is interested in assisting promising college graduates and career changers enter
the teaching profession through such program as EIU’s Accelerated Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure
Program. Significant financial assistance is available to candidates who are willing to be placed by the Golden
Apple Foundation in a rural school for the residency portion of the program, as well as commit to teaching in a
rural school for a specified length of time after program completion. Information on Golden Apple’s

EIU Rural School Initiative
The Eastern Illinois University Rural School Initiative and Rural Teacher Corps programs provide support,
financial assistance, and networking opportunities to both undergraduate and post-baccalaureate candidates
interested in teaching in rural schools in Illinois. Information about this opportunity may be found at

Testing Requirements
All Accelerated Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure candidates must fulfill the State of Illinois educator
testing requirements in order to obtain licensure; there are two main sets of tests that must be fulfilled:
The content test for the subject area in which a candidate intends to obtain licensure; for the Accelerated
Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Program, these tests must be passed prior to beginning classes (i.e.,
May 13, 2021. Information and preparation materials on these tests may be found at the Illinois Licensure
Testing System (ILTS) website: https://www.il.nesinc.com/
The state-required teaching performance assessment must be passed prior to obtaining licensure. In
Illinois, the required assessment is the edTPA, an authentic portfolio assessment that documents a
candidate’s skills in planning, teaching, and assessing during a five-day learning segment and employing
video documentation, student work samples, and analytical writing. Information about the edTPA may be
